First, the safety sequence
If you smell gas (the rotten-egg odorant) indoors:
- Don't flip switches, light flames, or unplug anything — any spark is a risk
- Open doors on your way out; don't stop to open windows
- Get everyone (pets included) out and away from the building
- From a safe distance, call your gas utility's emergency line — SoCalGas: 1-800-427-2200
- Don't re-enter until the utility clears the building
The utility stops the danger; the repair comes next
The utility's job is to make the scene safe — typically by shutting gas off at the meter. Restoring service is the licensed plumber's job: locating the leak, repairing or replacing the failed section, adding code items like shut-off valves and sediment traps where they're missing, and pressure-testing the system before gas flows again.
